How to deal with gout at the health food store, NOT with Big Pharma

Thank God I’ve never had to deal with gout! I’ve got some friends who have, and apparently, it is one of the most painful things that can happen to you. Based on what I’ve been told… For all of you gout sufferers out there… I really feel for you.

With that said, if you are like me and really don’t like going to the doctor or taking prescription drugs, I know of a way to relieve the pain of gout in an old-fashioned, home remedy sort of way. Take a trip down to your local health food store.

Frankly, when I first heard of this, I was sure that the person telling me was pulling my leg. There was no way that something as painful, and serious as gout seem to be, could be fixed with one trip to the health food store and an expenditure of less than $10. While I was aware that Big Pharma was not the answer to all of our health problems I didn’t think that the fix for something like gout could be that easy and that cheap.

But it is.

A friend of mine here in Jasper, Georgia, Roy Xxxx, (I will leave him anonymous to avoid embarrassing him) and I were talking on the phone one day. He mentioned that he had a doctors appointment later that afternoon.

Now there is something you have to understand about Roy. He’s a lot like me, in that if he is not five minutes away from dying he doesn’t want to go to the doctor. The fact that he was going to the doctor had me worried.

“What’s up, Roy? You don’t have anything serious going on, do you?”

He said that no, he didn’t have anything serious going on… It was just the main joint in one of his big toes was extremely painful and didn’t seem to be getting any better. He said he was going to the doctor because it was almost bad enough where he won gonna be able to walk.

I was thinking, “gout”, and thinking about the old home remedy that I had heard about, but I didn’t mention it… At least not right then.

What IS gout?

To understand how this remedy relieves the pain of gout it helps to know what gout is and what causes it in the first place.  The technical definition of gout according to Medilexicon’s medical dictionery is:

 “

A disorder of purine metabolism, occurring especially in men, characterized by a raised but variable blood uric acid level and severe recurrent acute arthritis of sudden onset resulting from deposition of crystals of sodium urate in connective tissues and articular cartilage; most cases are inherited, resulting from a variety of abnormalities of purine metabolism.

The familial aggregation is for the most part galtonian with a threshold of expression determined by the solubility of uric acid. However, gout is also a feature of the Lesch-Nyhan syndrome, an X-linked disorder.”

The short, simple version of that is that gout is a form of acute inflammatory arthritis caused by a buildup of sodium urate crystals in the joints,  It occurs 3 times more often in men than in women, and half of gout attacks occur in the joint at the base of the big toe.

The buildup of sodium urate crystals is due to abnormal metabolism of uric acid.

Bob, enough “what it is”…we want “how to fix it”!

Geeze…y’all have no patience!  (I understand…neither do I…LOL).

Allopathic medicine (traditional western medicine or as I like to call it, “Big Pharma” medicine, usually treats gout with:

  • NSAIDs, or non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs.  While these reduce the symtoms…pain…they do little to reduce the causation…the crystals that are grinding away inside the joint(s) in question.  Additionally, NSAIDs have a risk of stomach pain, ulcers, and bleeding, with the risk increasing as the dosage increases, all to relieve the symptoms, not fix the problem.
  • Colchicine is a Big Pharma gout medication that also treats the symptoms but not the causation.  Additionally it has a history of causing vomiting, diarrhea, and nausea.  It is also a toxic substance that has dosage issues as to just what constitutes a “safe” dose.
  • Steroids are another Big Pharma treatment that…you guessed it…treat only the symptoms, not the underlying problem, the crystals.  Some patients on steroids report a thinning of bones, poor healing of wounds, and a weakened immune system.
  • Uloric is the latest Big Pharma treatment for gout.  While it does address the underlying cause of gout…high uric acid levels in the blood…the list of warnings, contraindications, possible side effects, and drugs you can’t take it with is long.  For example, if you have a history of kidney issues, heart disease, diabetes, stroke, liver disease, or cancer you should avoid Uloic.  An incomplete list of possible side effects is:  chest pain or a “heavy” feeling in the chest, sudden numbness or weakness, especially on one side of the body, sudden headache, confusion, or problems with vision, speech, or balance, nausea, stomache, fever, and reduced appetite.Disclaimer:  This is not a complete list of side effects.  Consult your doctor for specific medical advice in your particular situation.

The non – Allopathic, non – Big Pharma solution

Take a trip to your local health food store and buy some juice…specifically black cherry juice (Alternatively you can eat Bing Cherries, but juice concentrate works better, faster).

Taking black cherry juice will have 5 benefits, only 3 of which are gout related:

  • Black cherry juice is an anti – inflammatory and will help reduce the pain from gout within a short period of time, much like the NSAID’s and steroids mentioned above.
  • In addition to the immediate (or very soon) pain relief from its anti – inflammatory properties, black cherry juice will actually dissolve the crystals in the joint(s) that are causing the pain in the first place.
  • Black cherry juice is a lot cheaper than the Big Pharma solutions.  You save on the cost of the doctor’s visit and the expensive Big Pharma medications.  A 16 oz bottle of 100% pure, no preservatives or added junk can be had for under $10.00 online.  Even in the brick and mortar store it is inexpensive.  At my local health food store (and it is SO much more than a “health food store”), Natural Market Place in Jasper, Georgia, it was is only $10.55 for a 16 oz bottle the last time I checked…which was 5 minutes ago.
  • Besides helping with gout, black cherries and black cherry juice are great sources of antioxidants, critical natural preventatives for diseases like cancer.  That makes black cherry juice a twofer…always a good thing.
  • The stuff just plain tastes good!  How often are you able to take something that acts medicinally and tastes good too…another twofer!

Do you know something else to do with it?  Well, since none of us are perfect, and we all do things that aren’t good for us occasionally, you might use it another way…its a great tasting topping for ice cream!

  1. No gout for me either but I had an uncle who had it back when I was an insensitive sprout. I do have arthritis however and it frustrates me no end that the only thing my doctor offers is ‘something’ for the pain. Bull crap! I’ve been drinking tea which is supposed to be anti-inflammatory. I don’t much like tea but if it actually reduces the inflammation, I’ll cope with the inconvenience.
Sure hope that there is more than one Roy in the thriving metropolis of Jasper. I’d hate to think that your friends anonymity might be compromised.

  2. There’s got to be at least one more, Ralph.

What brand of arthritis? If its rhumatoid, try the gout remedy. All gout is is a localized rhumatoid arthritis. They share the same cause. You never can tell…a $10 bottle of Black Cherry Juice might fix you right up. All you can lose is ten bucks.

  4. You know Ralph, you are not out $10, you still get a bottle of cherry juice. You can’t get much better than cherries, or cherry juice. My favorite fruit, now fights gout! I will never have gout! I am going to go plant another cherry tree

  5. Hi bob very good post you have here.Black cherry juice works for gout removing the uric acid in the joints but also diet and lifestyle is also a key factor. Also thanks for letting have my two cents.

  6. Black cherry juice….. whoda thunk it?!?

Most of todays health issues come from our health care system. We cant tell people they are fat, we cant tell them they are out of shape and we cant generally give them much good advice because they get “offended”.

His doctor was just dealing with the lowest common denominator, most folks want a pill. Have the patient change their diet or lifestyle?!?! ARE YOU effin CRAZY?

Anyways been a life long member of said system and what I see mostly abhors me, but it does pay the bills.

Bob, just found your site and I am having a great time looking through it. Thanks for you hard work and I will be sure to pass the black cherry secret on to my more courageous patients.

    Thanks

  7. Hi Clyde…glad yo have tou around as a new member of the JuicyMaters family. Keep coming back!

Yeah…between patients wanting an “easy fix” via a pill and Big Pharma treating symptoms rather than issues…the frug companies don’t really want to cure you because then they lose a customer…its no wonder we have a sick and getting sicker society.
